Five Simple Solutions to Indoor Air Pollution

Children with asthma need home to be safe. Finding solutions to indoor air pollution and following them can help our kids be able to breathe easy at home.

In some ways, solutions to indoor air pollution can be found by changing how we think about our home. We want it to be the safest place in the world...

...but it isn't always that way. We have to be on guard for our kids' health, even at home.

Start looking at every product and material in your home and think about how it might be affecting your child's asthma.

Many people don't think about things like cleaning products, carpeting, or building materials as possible irritants - I know I didn't.

But when my son's asthma became a concern, looking for triggers and irritants became a priority in our home.

5 Solutions to Indoor Air Pollution:

  • Get the best air purifier you can afford to buy for your home. We have one that we love so much, we bought the travel version to carry with us to hotels and on long car trips.

  • Pollutants from chemical cleaners stay in the air long after you've finished using them - even after you no longer smell them. So stop using them at all. Use safer choices that are non toxic and natural...

...they do the job and are safe for the family.

  • Find out what's in your home. Visit the National Institutes of Health Household Products Database and look up the toxicity and health information for common chemicals. You can also find out what common brands contain these chemicals, even thought they are probably not listed on the label.

  • Vent, vent, vent. Make sure the stove, furnace, fireplace, etc. all vent to the outside so any emissions do not build up in the home. Open the windows when you can (unless your family struggles with outdoor allergies!) to keep air flow moving.

  • Do not allow any smoking in the house at all. Secondhand smoke is very dangerous for everyone, especially those suffering from chronic conditions like asthma.
