Secondhand Smoke, It's Not Worth the Risk

I've never been a smoker, but secondhand smoke is something I commonly experienced at my grandmother's house while growing up. Her kitchen table always had a lazy susan that carried a cup full of spoons, salt & pepper shakers, a sugar bowl, and an ashtray.

She once told me that she started smoking after her mother died unexpectedly when she was just a teenager. The doctor thought it would help her relax.

These days, we know better.

The New York Times quoted four warning labels that were printed on cigarette packages in 1986. One of them read...

Warning: Quitting smoking now greatly reduces serious risk to your health.

It may sound funny in today's world, because we all know smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and many other health problems.

But what about when someone smokes near you? Turns out, it's just as bad.

Especially for kids with asthma.

Facts You Should Know

  • The EPA states that there are over 4,000 substances found in secondhand smoke.

  • Kids are more affected than adults because they breathe more quickly and have smaller bodies.

  • The American Lung Associate says that it is a risk factor for causing 'new asthma' and...

  • ...children of smokers are twice as likely to develop asthma as those of parents who do not smoke.

As a parent, I see it as my responsibility to keep my kids away from secondhand smoke as much as possible. Children, especially young ones, are not around smoke unless their parents allow it.

So what can you do to keep your child safe from this dangerous asthma trigger?
